AI is crushing the BSS vendors

There’s a set of telcos in the world that are making the shift to the future. They see what artificial intelligence (AI) can do, can imagine what that means for their business, and they want that to be their reality TODAY. This group has realized that their next BSS won’t be purchased; it will be machine-generated by AI and it will unshackle them from the legacy vendor jail they’ve been trapped in.

Meanwhile there’s another set of telcos that seem to think the world hasn’t changed, so they continue to purchase systems as if it was 1999.

Which one are you?

Oh, telco. Leave it to you guys to completely ignore the AI revolution happening everywhere. Imagine my surprise (NOT!) when I saw the latest update from Omdia’s Telco Software Evolution Survey, revealing the spectacular lack of understanding of what AI can do for telco. When Omdia asked 47 senior telco decision makers about vendor selection priorities, 33% prioritized “track record and reliability” while only 12% cared about AI expertise (not even “being AI-first,” just “do they have expertise”). OOF.

This cohort of telco executives are literally selecting vendors based on past performance instead of future AI capability. I guess the upside is that they see packaged BSS as the commodity offering that it is, as evidenced by putting price at the top of the list of priorities. They want the old stuff, and they want it cheap.

Meanwhile, Jamie Dimon, CEO of JP Morgan Chase, is betting $3 BILLION DOLLARS a year on AI for his bank. What does he know that you don’t?

Meet the future

AI-native startups are bulldozing established vendors everywhere. Cursor AI hit $100 million in annual recurring revenue in just 12 months, completely blindsiding GitHub Copilot with AI-native code completion that developers are raving about, with Ben Bernard from Instacart calling it “at least a 2x improvement over Copilot.” Intercom’s Fin AI agent for customer service is achieving an average resolution rate of 51%, while traditional customer service platforms scramble to retrofit their legacy systems with AI. Perplexity is now being called “the best search engine” by veterans who’ve been using search tools since the 1970s, challenging Google’s 26-year dominance.

So, what about telco?
