Ep 43 – Telco’s Pinball Wizard: Neil McRae
BT Chief Architect Neil McRae talks about the company's digital transformation and strategies for working with hyperscalers … and pinball, of course!
CLOUD CITY is back, baby! The TelcoDR team has been hard at work preparing our VIRTUAL showcase of cloud native tech for telcos. That’s right, we’re 100% in the clouds this year, and you can join us from anywhere in the world from February 22 through March 2.
In this episode, I sit down with my good friend David Haselwood to talk about what we’ve done to bring the experience of in-person events to our virtual platform, and what you’ll find during the event – including a chance to meet with telco software vendors, check out their cloud-native product demos, and listen to a super fun keynote from little ol’ me. Listen now to find out how CLOUD CITY came together, and:

CLOUD CITY is Danielle Rios Royston’s showcase of cloud-native technology built for the telecom industry. Originally a massive physical presence at MWC Barcelona—65,000 square feet in the former Ericsson space—the 2022 edition moved to a virtual event due to ongoing COVID uncertainty and the Omicron variant. DR made the call that a virtual format would allow more meetings with more people than a physical booth where attendance was uncertain.
Attendees can browse virtual booths from cloud-native telco vendors, watch product demos, download white papers and presentations, book instant meetings, and schedule future calls—all without leaving their desk. DR designed the experience to replicate the best parts of walking a trade show floor: discovery, demos, and deal-making, minus the sore feet.
Both. Attendees can explore vendors on their own, while vendors use the platform to showcase cloud-native solutions, generate leads, and book meetings with telco decision-makers. The event spans February 22 through March 2, 2022, with the platform remaining on-demand for an additional 30 days.
The 2021 physical CLOUD CITY generated over 750 press articles and is credited with helping push cloud to the center of the MWC agenda. By 2022, MWC introduced a dedicated cloud track called CloudNet—something DR attributes directly to the momentum CLOUD CITY created. Nearly 30 vendors participated in 2021, and deals including an $80 million joint venture were signed out of the event.
DR is attending MWC in person and delivering a session titled “Public Cloud: The Key Questions” on March 2 at 10:45 AM CET in Hall 5, Stage B. TelcoDR, Totogi, and Skyvera are all featured as virtual exhibitors through GSMA’s platform. She is also hosting a keynote within the virtual CLOUD CITY event covering why and how telcos should move to the public cloud.
DR recommends visiting the TelcoDR booth at virtual CLOUD CITY as a starting point. TelcoDR helps telcos build a business case for the public cloud, manage migrations, and optimize cloud costs through FinOps practices—an area DR flagged as increasingly critical as telcos realize cloud financial management works very differently than on-prem. Executives can also set up a meeting with Totogi directly through the website.
