Ep 111 – Building an AI-first telco (MWC)

A few weeks ago I gave my FIFTH Mobile World Congress talk at the GSMA’s Gen AI Summit. More than 2,000 people RSVP’d for the event, and the room was packed with telco industry leaders eager to learn more about building an AI-first telco.

But the big problem they have to overcome is their mountain of tech debt from their legacy BSS systems. In my talk, I explained how AI can help operators leverage their existing BSS estate and use it to drive toward an AI-first future. I’ve turned my talk into this podcast. Listen now to learn:

  • The transformation that happens when intelligence moves above all your systems [04:19];
  • How BSS Magic launches new products and offerings in minutes instead of months [04.55];
  • Why having enterprise-wide intelligence, purpose-built for telecom, accelerates transformation [07:34]; and
  • How AI can breathe new life into legacy systems and turn technical debt into a strategic advantage [08:33].

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is BSS Magic and how does it help telcos become AI-first?

BSS Magic is Totogi’s enterprise-wide intelligence platform that adds an AI layer above all existing telco systems instead of replacing them. It transforms legacy BSS infrastructure by moving intelligence above applications, enabling AI agents to coordinate across charging, order management, marketing, and other systems. This approach cuts change request spend by 75%, reduces time-to-market from months to minutes, and turns technical debt into a strategic advantage by breathing new life into existing investments. Learn more about BSS Magic and book a demo to see how it works.

2. How quickly can BSS Magic launch new products compared to traditional methods?

BSS Magic can launch new products in minutes instead of the typical nine or more months. Danielle Rios demonstrated launching an iPhone 16e in under 30 seconds for system connections—a task that normally takes six months and millions in integration costs. The complete launch—including inventory forecasting, creating 5G plans, generating contracts, and producing support documentation—happens in minutes rather than the months traditionally required for product design, technical configuration, and system integration. Watch the video version of Danielle’s MWC25 talk to see the demonstration.

3. What did Satya Nadella mean when he said business applications will “collapse in the agent era”?

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella explained that traditional business applications are essentially CRUD databases with business logic. In the agent era, this logic will move to AI agents that can update multiple databases regardless of backend systems. Rather than having intelligence trapped in individual applications, the logic moves to an “AI tier” where agents coordinate across all systems—exactly what BSS Magic delivers by placing intelligence above telco applications instead of within isolated vendor systems.

4. Why do telcos spend 80% of their IT budgets maintaining existing systems?

Telcos are trapped under highly customized spaghetti code from legacy BSS systems, requiring massive maintenance investments just to keep operations running. Each vendor operates in walled gardens with its own AI and transformation agendas, where every customization takes operators further from vendor roadmaps. This creates expensive integration complexity and forces telcos to measure changes in months or years, preventing them from moving at market speed. Read more about how Totogi is ending the era of billion-dollar BSS failures.

5. How does Totogi’s approach differ from other AI transformation programs?

Unlike traditional transformation programs that require replacing existing systems, Totogi’s BSS Magic works with operators’ current infrastructure—whether Netcracker, Oracle, or Amdocs. It leverages TM Forum open standards and decades of telco expertise built into a telco-specific ontology. Every system added strengthens the intelligence, and the platform learns from billions of interactions within the operator’s secure framework. 6. What competitive advantages do AI-first telcos gain according to Danielle Rios?

AI-first telcos can respond to market opportunities in real time, optimize revenue across every segment, and increase ARPU by up to 20% while reducing operating costs. They maximize value from every subscriber, network asset, and opportunity by having their entire organization “think as one.” In contrast to telcos stuck explaining multi-year transformations to their boards, AI-first operators demonstrate how AI delivers shareholder value today. Danielle explored this topic in her 2024 MWC MVNO Summit talk, “Unveiling the AI-First Future of BSS” and her interview with TelecomTV at MWC25.
