Ep 85 – What’s up with Totogi: 2degrees, a modern telco
New Zealand MNO 2degrees is tapping Totogi's multi-tenant charger to streamline MVNO onboarding and support, and to capture additional revenue.
Last week I gave my FOURTH keynote talk at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 when I opened the second annual MVNO Summit to a standing-room-only crowd of industry leaders. Most were from MNOs, MVNOs, and digital brands that want to be at the forefront of an AI-powered revolution in telco business support systems (BSS).
In my talk, I introduced a new AI-first, fully customized BSS solution that blends speed, scalability, and affordability to deliver a next-gen experience that streamlines operations and lowers costs. In the middle of it, I chatted with an avatar and created a BSS right on stage!
We captured the talk on video, and I’ve turned it into this podcast. Listen now to learn:

BSS Magic is Totogi’s AI-powered business support system that allows business users to create fully customized BSS solutions through natural conversation with an AI avatar. The avatar is trained on telco-specific knowledge about MVNO and MNO needs and can generate code, design user interfaces, integrate with third-party systems like Zendesk, and migrate data from legacy systems—all in real-time. Unlike traditional BSS vendors that require expensive consulting and lengthy deployment times, BSS Magic enables non-technical users to build and modify their BSS independently, combining full customization with speed and affordability.
According to Danielle Rios, two major technological revolutions are converging to disrupt the telecom industry: generative AI and the public cloud. Both technologies share critical advantages—they’re significantly better and cheaper than existing solutions. Just as DR predicted the public cloud’s impact on telco at MWC 2021, she now sees generative AI as the catalyst that makes truly affordable, customizable, and fast-to-deploy BSS possible. This combination is leveling the playing field against incumbent vendors whose consulting-heavy business models are slow and expensive.
Totogi’s BSS Magic solves the classic BSS trade-off by delivering all three things telecom operators want simultaneously: full customization, affordability, and speed. Traditional BSS vendors typically excel in only one or two of these areas—they either customize extensively but are slow and expensive, or they’re fast but limited in customization options. BSS Magic uses generative AI to enable business users to create their own customized BSS without calling vendors for change requests, eliminating the typical $100,000 cost and four-week timeline for modifications, while deploying complete solutions in minutes instead of months.
BSS Magic uses AI to automatically understand different data schemas and structures, generating all necessary integration code in minutes rather than the months traditionally required. The system can integrate with major BSS vendors like Ericsson, Amdocs, and Huawei, and leverages TM Forum Open APIs for standardized connections. During the MWC demonstration, Totogi’s avatar connected to Zendesk for customer support in real-time, automatically mapping customer identification fields and displaying active tickets on the customer 360 view. The AI continuously learns from each integration project, optimizing algorithms for future migrations and detecting anomalies—all without requiring an army of software developers.
During her keynote at the MVNO Summit, Danielle Rios demonstrated building a complete BSS for a hypothetical MrBeast MVNO in just eight minutes through conversation with the Totogi avatar. The demo showed creating customer journeys, designing a custom user interface with brand colors and layouts, generating three rate plans with AI-created marketing copy and banner ads, integrating with Zendesk for customer support, and adding Totogi’s Churn Prediction service. The avatar understood natural language requests, generated flawless code instantly, and made real-time modifications—all demonstrating how business users can now be creators rather than depending on traditional BSS vendors.
BSS Magic is designed for MVNOs, MNOs, and digital brands launching mobile services, but its benefits extend beyond operators. Totogi built this solution specifically for IT teams frustrated by BSS change requests that take months to complete and CFOs tired of paying outrageous prices for BSS software. Whether you’re launching a new MVNO targeting two million subscribers or an established operator wanting to quickly test new offers and customer experiences, BSS Magic enables any business user to create, modify, and manage a BSS independently without expensive consulting engagements or long deployment timelines.
